BSL2 Handling Practices, Bloodborne Pathogens and Medical Waste
UC Core Competency
Researchers working with tissues of human or nonhuman primate origin are at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens. The module reviews the responsibilities and operational standards required to reduce or prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens. The session covers the following areas: Accessing the Bloodborne Pathogens Standards (29 CFR 1910.1030; CCR Title 8 Section 5193), conventional and laboratory bloodborne pathogens, disease transmission, Hepatitis B vaccine, recognizing potential exposure risks, methods of compliance to reduce or prevent exposure, personal protective equipment, signage, decontamination and disinfection, basic components of an exposure control plan, post-exposure procedure and follow-up, and emergency/blood spill clean up. This course is intended for the laboratory research community, including graduate students, post-docs, undergraduates and visiting researchers.
